Principal's Book of the Month

Our book of the month for October, Mirette on the High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully, focuses on the character trait of courage. Monsieur Bellini comes to Paris to hide. He’s a high wire walker who has lost the courage to perform. When Mirette show interest in his talent, he hesitantaly begins to train her to walk the wire.

Mirette on the High Wire illustrates the character trait of courage as it show how Mirette’s courage inspires Monsieur Bellini to be brave and return to walking the high wire. This courage to meet challenges is a trait we strive to develop in all Toney’s students. We want them to confront the challenges of learning with confidence in themselves and in their abilities. When they are faced with difficulties we don’t want them to stop in defeat; we want them to have the courage to continue toward success knowing that the staff of Toney is always close by to offer help.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is taking action in the face of fear. It takes courage to fight the temptations and struggles in everyday life. It takes courage to succeed when others would like to see you fail. Finally, it takes courage to stand up for those less fortunate. No one would disagree that courage is a valuable character trait—one that will serve as a foundational piece in your child’s life.
